Spanning tree is a protocol that prevents broadcast domains from getting larger than they need to be and also prevents looping and broadcast storms. 3. What is a Layer 3 switch? A Layer 3 switch is what we call a 'smart' switch, which means it has the capabilities to perform some Layer 3 functions such as routing. A layer 3 switch looks like a regular layer 2 switch with the exception that it can also perform some of the Layer 3 functions such as routing. 4. What is an access point? An access point (AP) is used to bridge wireless and wired networks together and also to provide wireless connectivity for devices that do not have wireless capability built in. 5.
